People in Scotland are engaged in politics these days, & the fact that the electoral system is not just a First Past The Post one probably helps a lot.

The Additional Member Scheme (here using D’Hondt method) will balance the Scottish Parliament today.

The @theSNP have won lots of constituencies, some by a small margin.

Today the “list” system will bring forward more MSPs from those parties defeated on the first ballot. It’s important that those who voted for them are also represented, and they will be.
The largest beneficiaries will be the @ScottishLabour & @ScotTories, who will both end up with significant numbers of MSPs in the next parliament.

Whether you like them or not, it’s right that they should be there!

It’s an awful thing if people don’t feel that their political institutions represent them.

We’ll get a (politically) multicoloured parliament this weekend. Which by & large, will represent the range of views of people in Scotland.

It’s not a perfect system, but it beats FPTP!
The other great thing about the Additional Member System with “list” seats, is that parties like the @scottishgreens become more relevant too.

They will always (at the moment) struggle in the constituencies, but are now strong players in the lists.

Those voices will be heard.
The system is designed to create a parliament where it’s unlikely for any party to dominate, and effectively force collaborative politics.

We’ve seen that over the last two decades. It’s been a good thing!

The fact that one party has previously won a majority is quite remarkable and suggests that there is very strong support for them, or at least some of what they represent.

Maybe people quite like a system where we can make decisions in Scotland about the matters that affect us?!
I’m looking forward to the results today.

Of course I want the parties (at least 3) that I support to do well.

But I’m also going to celebrate if we have a balanced parliament, as that’s a better, fairer system.

On a side note, we also use a good system in local elections, with a Single Transferable Vote. Again, not ideal, but better than First Past The Post....
Maybe what our friends in England need to do is to look at our voting systems in Wales and Scotland, and consider whether electoral reform is actually what they need?

Though why the prison officers would hand over the keys to the door, would be a tricky question to answer!
