[based on the funeral scene from the battle of the labyrinth, pjo series. some of the dialogue is there, but for this they're older than 14-15 lol]

as soon as the raft hits the shore, iwaizumi takes off running, straight to the pavilion.
it was, in a way, uncharacteristic of iwaizumi but he almost shouts, knows he's already spent so much time away without everyone else knowing but then he hears it.

he slows to a stop, processing the announcement, and when he realizes his stomach sinks, takes it all in.
"after so long of a silence, it is unlikely that our prayers have been answered, so now, i ask his long surviving friend to do the final honors."

iwaizumi is frozen in place, watches as the man comes on stage, slowly, a little lifelessly, and his heart breaks.
oikawa looks like shit.

his eyes are sunken, puffy and red, as if he'd been crying all night. his face is pale, and his hair is unruly, yet his hands don't drift to his hair even once, instead clutching a familiar sea-green silk with an embroidered trident unto it.
iwaizumi watches his hand shake, clutching the cloth tightly before finally letting it drop unto open flames, and when he speaks it's shaky, eyes trained unto the slowly burning cloth.

"he was... stupid, impulsive, /reckless/," he bites out, sniffles. "but he was the bravest+
friend i've ever had. and he–" his voice cracks ever so slightly, rubs his eyes before looking up and then iwaizumi is looking into brown wide eyes—

"he's right there," oikawa breathes, mouth dropping open, and everyone gasps, turns, and there are shouts of exclamations but all+
he sees is oikawa marching up to him, first desperately then angrily, and then he's being grabbed by the collar of his shirt fiercely— but all iwaizumi sees are brown brown eyes, the color of soil, of home.

"you— where the hell have you been, iwaizumi?" oikawa shouts, shakes him
"tooru, i—" iwaizumi doesn't know where to start.

"don't /tooru/ me, you asshole!" oikawa interjects, shoving him. he stumbles and almost falls back but oikawa's right there in an instant, hands patting him over a little desperately before gripping his face tightly, but gently.
"oikawa, calm down!" iwaizumi yelps, hands going to oikawa's wrists— to break free or ground himself, he doesn't know. "i'm here, i'm fine. i... got lost."

wrong.

like gasoline, the words fuel oikawa's fury more.

"lost?!" he demands, and a hand goes on iwaizumi's nape.
"you were gone for /weeks/ hajime!" he shakes iwaizumi slightly, but he holds on, steps even closer, as if iwaizumi would disappear if he loosens his hold even the slightest bit, but iwaizumi lets him.

"i heard the explosion, and then i couldn't go back, and i..."
"i thought i lost you."

oikawa whispers it, and iwaizumi's heart pangs as he watches tears shine in the other's eyes, so he starts rubbing his thumbs on the skin of his arm, steps closer to knock their foreheads together, whispers.

"i'm sorry, okay? but i'm here, tooru."
and oikawa looks into his eyes, but when the pain and sorrow and relief becomes too much to hide he looks down, stares on the slope of his nose, his cheeks, then—

his lips.

iwaizumi suddenly remembers their last few moments before the volcano erupted.
so his eyes drift down of their own accord to stare at the dip of oikawa's lips, and he stares, wants nothing more but to pull and maybe, just maybe, oikawa would let him taste—

"iwaizumi, oikawa. let's talk about this incident somewhere... private, perhaps?"
the moment is gone, broken by their mentor, and they break apart, oikawa avoiding his gaze while iwaizumi openly stares.

he wants to comfort oikawa more, tell him he's not going to leave again, even when the promise is futile considering the life they live, but oikawa+
stalks away after a quiet mutter of "fine."

iwaizumi watches him go, feeling frustrated without any idea of making this better.

"let's go, child." there's a hand on his shoulder guiding him away from the pavilion, towards the same direction oikawa went.
and iwaizumi vows to himself that from then on, he'll do everything he could to never see oikawa like that again— no matter what it takes.

even if it kills him.

—end.
