I'm not sure if this was intended but Into Darkness Klingons look like a step between DS9/Voyager Klingons and Discovery Klingons. You don't see them for too long without their armor/masks so maybe that's part of why I didn't recall.

This 'open the airlock and hold on for dear life's stunt is legit the exact same thing Michael did at the end of Season 3.
