I was raised right. My parents raised me in church, taught me to say yes, ma'am, yes sir, please, and thank you.

They taught me the value of hard work, cost of money, free enterprise, and the American dream.

They encouraged me to dream big, to not let anything discourage me.

My mom and dad taught me to tithe at church, to pay my debts to my creditors, to pay my taxes to the government.

They asked me to stand up when the Star Spangled Banner was playing, even in front of the TV, and put my hand on my heart. I know and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

I was taught to respect all authorities, to admire the police and firefighters. I was brought up to not only honor the military, but to thank them every time.

My dad always paid the check of any officer in uniform and veterans at restaurants, without them knowing. I do too.

I was raised free to dream big, to look out for the needy, to help others as Jesus did.

I grew up playing at school and inviting friends home who had different skin color, different ethnicity, different upbringing. We shared candy, exchanged gum (yes, gross!), traded clothes.

I didn't know of color, wealth, privilege until I went to college. That's where I heard for the first time that I was privileged, prejudiced, sexist, bigot, racist, a bad person, and that I was raised wrong. I heard the first time that America was not the Land of Opportunity.

I heard in college I didn't need to say thank you, because older generations owed to me for their sin, that I didn't need to show respect to older people, authorities, our national symbols.

Professors insisted I was free not because of the blood of our heroes, but by my will.

BUT, I was raised right!

I knew, as I am convinced now, I am free due to the blood of our heroes who fought for our country and FREE because of the blood of Jesus who fought for you and I, so that we could love each other, no matter our color, ethnicity, upbringing, our past.
8/
I still say please, thank you, yes ma'am, yes sir.

I work hard, pay my dues, help the needy, honor our heroes.

I believe the only thing free is free enterprise. The rest I work for, hard, and our beautiful country, under God, is fruitful enough to provide for us all.
