Reflecting on the election results, I keep going back to my Aunty
She was staunchly Labour, then as her better educated family moved away she became disillusioned with the party, they did nothing to improve her life chances, meanwhile she saw strangers, “foreigners” doing well

She got drawn into UKIP, her social media was full of like minded people passing on and repeating what was clearly propaganda
She became radicalised and channelled her anger towards the EU & anyone who questioned her logic or evidence base
She gloated when Vote Leave won

Now she supports Boris
She does so, knowing his flaws, knowing his corruption & how useless he is
She does so because he doesn’t criticise her for xenophobia, he actively encourages it
He doesn’t sneer at her ignorance & lack of facts, he’s the PM& he brazenly ignores experts

The Tories have essentially became the UKIP party in all but name, so her allegiance switched, from Labour, to UKIP and now on to Boris Johnson’s Conservatives
The question is, will she ever go back to Labour?

I don’t think she will ever accept that Brexit caused anything but sunlit uplands, there’s a complete denial of any & all issues stemming from Brexit
Sad to say, I don’t think she’s suffered enough of the negative consequences of Tory rule or Brexit to change her mind, not yet!

Deep down she knows Johnson has no interest in helping her
But the reality is, her life has been fairly crap for decades, so in her mind that’s no different to any politician whose done nothing of note to improve her life
The mud isn’t sticking when it comes to Boris

The steady drip of bad news hasn’t diminished her support
That he’s an arse is factored in to her vote
Sad to say, it’s only when something personal and significant goes dramatically wrong AND can be directly linked to Johnson’s that I can see her views and votes changing

I have no answers or solution to bringing people like this back to Labour
Parroting the right wing rhetoric she now sees as normal will drive away as many supporters as it wins back
But for Labour to win power they need her vote & millions like her
It’s a circle I can’t square
