As #ESNfantasy kicks off this weekend, I had a look at last season’s data to see where the fantasy points came from. I didn’t quite get to grips with the game last season, so want a solid start this year.
Warning: Last season's performances guarantee nothing this season!
[1/13]
As a reminder, here is the final league table of the season, with thanks to fbref: http://bit.ly/esn20final  Start and Aalesund were relegated and replaced by the promoted Lillestrøm and Tromsø
[2/13]
Team Fantasy Points
No surprises in the top three with Bodø, Molde and Vülerenga producing the most fantasy points. Rosenborg and Brann were the underperformers relative to their league position with Sandefjord and Mjøndalen being the overperformers.....

[3/13]
With the bookies fancying these two to be in the relegation fight could they still hold some hidden fantasy gold?

[4/13]
Points by Position: Generally
The table below shows the total fantasy points scored by each position. Def and Mid lead the way even when broken down by the number of players per position e.g. 5 mid and 3 fwd. Could this provide a decent guide on how to spend our budget?
[5/13]
Positions: Top 3 Clubs
The top 3 clubs, Bodo, Molde and Valerenga provided just over 24% of all points, slightly more than we might expect.

[6/13]
Positions per Club
The next table shows how each position contributed to their own teams total. The green/orange cells show positions that overperformed/underperformed against the position average.
[7/13]
Positions per Club 2
It’s easy to see why Bodo won with the mid and fwd performing so well.

Interestingly Sandefjords fantasy overperformance against their league position seems to have come from their defence and keeper. Could they be a source of points this season?
[8/13]
Price Brackets
For each position I had a look at different price groupings to try and see where the points came from, and the price ranges of the top scoring group of players for each position.
[9/13]
Price Brackets 2
You can see that the price ranges of the top performing players is wide, so it is worth trawling for that underpriced gem.

In each position the premium priced players bring in the points but mid price keepers and midfielders were key last season.
[10/13]
How does this any of this help pick my team?

Firstly funding big hitters in defence and midfield seems a priority

Secondly, I start to ask if these teams can replicate last season’s performance?
[11/13]
Bodo have lost Juncker, Zinckernagel etc and the bookies still have them as second favourites.

Rosenborg are the bookies third favourites despite last years performance.

Who to side with?
