The “therapy is cool” to “therapy is cool but expensive” to “therapy CAN be life changing with a GOOD therapist, but is widely inaccessible” to “therapy can be life changing but is widely inaccessible and a LOT of it is deeply entangled in bigotry and white supremacy” pipeline

@iwritecoolstuff talks a lot about anti blackness and racism in psychiatry, psychology and the neurodivergent community on their page and I feel like I’ve grown as an advocate as a result of their content. I highly recommend giving them a follow. https://twitter.com/iwritecoolstuff/status/1346712213063667713
also want to clarify that I’m not anti therapy at all. Effective therapy saved my life but I also recognize that the damage done by our institutions of mental health care is extreme and a system that works well (ish) for a few people isn’t a system that works well.
And this is also why shaming people who don’t wanna go to therapy even when they’re really unwell and have the financial resources feels so wrong to me because there are so many different incredibly real and relevant reasons for doubt and hesitation about therapy
I think this is something that as a community of people who advocate for self care and recovery we need to have more conversations about because there’s a lot of ignorance (mine included) around anything regarding psychology/psychiatry that goes beyond our personal experiences
While you’re here consider following some of my favorite POC creators/accounts that talk about mental health/disability/neurodivergency from intersectional perspectives and linj any more you like! @tee_spoonie @kaekaecurtis @Imani_Barbarin @IzntGoingAway @afrodykee @shantilly_t
