oh this is interesting. apparently NAC was approved as a drug in 1985 (not 1963). it was classified by FDA as a drug, and not a dietary supplement. I just read section 201(ff). https://twitter.com/JulianaLung/status/1390747763684478976
NAC has been flying under the radar for a long time. it's a drug you can (soon could?) buy anywhere, but FDA has reared its head about it presumably bc of covid. guess everyone will have to get an rx for the equivalent of chicken soup for their hangovers.
FDA wants to protect you from an amino acid that's been around and used safely for decades, and their inroad suddenly seems to be that it's also an inhalant, putting it in violation of a "dietary supplement." but it apparently never was a dietary supplement? I'm confused.
if I understand correctly there's a new provision that FDA doesn't need to prove that an ingredient is poisonous anymore. they can just say it "may possibly injure the health.. of humans," and that's a sufficient safety standard 🙄
for better or worse, FDA is the Virgo who shows up to the party with a clipboard
