How We Moved a Keyword Ranking Stuck on Page 2 for Years to Page 1 in a Matter of Months!

A client of mine approached me several months back asking for help achieving first-page-rankings for their primary keyword, which had a search volume of 41,000.

How we did it:

[THREAD]
1. Keyword Research

Anytime you have a primary keyword in mind, you should always identify long-tail variations of that primary keyword to target so you pull in as much traffic as possible.

I simply inputted the keyword in Ahrefs, and out came a ton of great options!
Obviously, not every option is going to super relevant to the page you're trying to rank.

In this case, it was a collection page, so we focused on finding secondary, long-tail variations that had some sort of buying intent, or was directly related to the product being sold.
2. Construct a Meta Title

The meta title is arguably one of the most important ranking signals to Google.

It's incredibly important that you include all of your target keywords in it.

Here's the formula we used:

Primary Keyword | Secondary Keyword | Secondary Keyword
3. Add Content

In the world of SEO, content is King.

One of my favorite strategies for ranking collection pages is to add around 1,000-2,000 words of extremely in-depth, keyword-rich content below the listed products.

This improves the relevancy off the page for the keywords.
4. Disavow Spammy Links

This client unfortunately built a lot of spammy links to this collection page over the years, in hopes of getting it to rank.

Spammy links with low authority and low relevancy with hurt your SEO.

So we disavowed them, so Google would ignore them.
5. Built High Quality Links

Next, we ran an outreach campaign to build high quality, relevant links to this collection page.

For whatever reason, collection pages respond VERY well to links.

We did around 50% branded/random anchors, and 50% exact/partial-exact-match.
6. Fixed Keyword Cannibalization

Keyword cannibalization is when you have multiple pages targeting the same keyword.

Essentially what happens is that the pages compete in Google, and ultimately Google doesn't know what to rank, so none of the pages end up ranking well.
The homepage of this site actually had this target keyword in its meta title, which was creating keyword cannibalization, so we simply removed it from the meta title.

Then, we waited.

Within two months, the keyword hit Page 1.

One month after that, it hit the #3 spot!
Check out how the number of clicks changed for this keyword once it hit the first page, and then entered the top 3 spot.

As we continue to build the right links, and deploy a content strategy that internally links to the collection page, this page will move to position #1.
