This concise book by @JerryHendrixII is a MUST READ for naval thinkers, officers, Sailors, and Marines. It addresses the challenges of the modern #Navy -- from ship composition & size to foundational precepts of the freedom of the sea and the Navy's purpose. 1/
Here are some of the most salient points for me. The Navy needs to get out and "walk its beat" again. The Navy needs to exercise it's influence globally and make it's presence felt again -- and that cannot be done by simply rolling by in high-end ships. 2/
On a related point, if requirements for naval assets continue, the Navy will need to expand the Fleet -- but also diversify it's composition. This includes building small/swallow ships like amphibs, coast patrol, and more. Sea power cannot be one dimensional. 3/
But power & influence at sea is connected to national power as a sea power -- which includes infrastructure, education, commerical merchant fleet, shipping yards, and more. A fleet does not exist in a vaccuum. 4/
So as the Marine Corps continues on its path of naval integration, Marines must also seek to understand the foundational tenets of naval capabilities, sea power, and the importance of the freedom of the seas. End/
