one of the reasons why i& #39;m constantly critical of the things i like is because worshipping something to the point where you get upset over every hate comment/criticism about it takes a pretty bad toll on your mental health
people align their identities with their special interests and a lot of the time refuse to accept criticism or consume more media because they don& #39;t want the thing that they like to have Problems or Flaws because that calls into question their own judgement
i used to worship the Thing that i liked when i was in high school and would obsessively check reviews to make sure Everyone Was Also Liking The Thing That I Liked. i would get easily upset over hate comments about my favorite characters and it would literally ruin my day
if i saw professional reviews of something i liked being criticized or getting a negative reviews i would start to spiral and sometimes even actually cry. it wasn& #39;t until i started to distance myself and realize that the things i like COULD have problems was when i got better
these criticisms that people have of The Thing I Like doesn& #39;t mean that i can& #39;t enjoy it. i wasn& #39;t Wrong or Bad or Stupid for liking media that had flaws and it was okay to acknowledge that and listen to what others have to say without it effecting me mentally
this is basically just a long-winded way of me saying fanaticism isn& #39;t healthy. you need to have a balance of being critical and enjoying things to keep something from completely overtaking your life and stunting your growth as a reader. this piece of media isn& #39;t the world
