I have many thoughts but one of them is this: there are thousands of labour members still having to spend a huge amount of time winning back or holding onto power within the party to keep the hard left out. It’s essential but skews views and distracts from the work we need to do
Secondly I fear we have got the balance wrong on leading the voters and representing them. We can’t tell our voters that the way they live is wrong. Too often we’ve been talking about stuff no-one cares about or is interested in.
Thirdly I fear we have suffered from ‘the left’ as a whole moving to the left and often the voices voters are seeing in the media actually being by very far from a mainstream labour agenda but a misunderstanding that they speak for us. Voters are largely not radical.
I still like Keir. He’s got an even bigger job ahead of him than we thought. Some heavyweight political brains are going to be needed. And some pretty bold direction.
