Ya boi hasn't slept, and it is 6 am, which means it's time for another twitter thread that I have no idea where it is going. This time featuring: foils on the dream smp!
For people that don't know foils are two characters that naturally oppose each other.
There are two main pairs of foils, Quackity and Technoblade and the one of recent discussion Ranboo and Wilbur. Imma start off with saying that it is amazing that these were entirely by chance but they blended beautifully into the plot, it's one of the things I love about the smp
I'll start off with big Q and techno. Techno joined the smp powerful, it was well known how good he was at pvp and he lived up to it even more by grinding powerful stuff. Big Q wasn't weak per se, but he wasn't known for being strong or good at minecraft, and hardly wore armor
The first thing techno did was join pogtopia, while big q was the vice president of Manburg. A lot of people seemed to forget that Q lost a canon life alongside shlatt and tubbo, but nobody forgets that techno did it. Techno incited rebellion, big q was fine where he was
Quackity was seen as someone with very little power, and he wants power as where techno has always been seen as powerful, but wants even power among the people, and nothing to do with it himself. Everything Q has done has been to gain power, and Techno has done to destroy it
I could go on a whole other rant on the exact reasons both of them did what they have done, but when you strip it down to the bare minimum, Q is seen as weak, and wants to have power, and techno is seen as powerful and wants to destroy it.
Now let's get into Ranboo and Wilbur. I'm personally super excited about how this plays out personally bc ranboo and Wilbur are about as opposite as you can get, in personality and beliefs. They are the perfect example of foil characters and I love it. I'm so hyped.
Let's start with personalitys, Wilbur is generally a very out there guy, not afraid to tell you how he feels or do what he wants. Ranboo is super reserved, will hardly talk unless spoken (unless you're close) to and is always cautious about doing things that might upset anyone
And don't even get me started on their beliefs. It's Mr "defence is cowardice" "the only way to make a point is violence" "sacrifices must be made" vs. Mr "maxed out netherite armour" "will only attacked if attacked first" "has gotten every totem within 10000 blocks of spawn"
I'll go through these one at a time. First we have Wils belief of defence is cowardice. This is armour, ofc, but it's also lying to protect yourself. Ranboo is the perfect example of both, he immediately got maxed armour when he joined, and he lies for his safety all the time.
The next is Wils beliefs is violence is the only way to solve problems. Ranboo is one of the few passivests left on the server, and always wants to find a way to solve the problems without fighting if at all possible. The only time he's fought is when punz attacked him first
Finally there is the belief sacrifices must be made. Ranboo has 40 totems, and is willing to give them out to people putting themselves in danger. None of his friends are gonna die on his watch. There is definitely more to put here but my brain stopped functioning hours ago.
Both of these foils are so beautiful, and have so much potential (mostly ranboo and wil, Q and technos dynamic was already explored) and it's crazy to belive none of it was planned, it was literally how the turns tabled (ik that's not correct, I just forgot the expression)
Like, when these people joined, they had no idea that the plot was gonna perfectly line up for those characters to oppose each other, yet they did, and I and still not over that. /dsmp /rp
Ik that there is more to the characters that what I stated but I'm very tired, twitter has a character limit, and I refuse to make a twitlonger because it will just turn into a entire essay, and this is long as it is, so sorry.
