I made a tweet saying Expressing my joy for an artist’s transition from secular to gospel and I’m getting some fuming comments like “secular doesn’t mean devilish” etc. So let me respond. This is a thick THREAD. I hope you’re ready. 😅
For those who don’t truly know what “secular” means, or you’re not sure, Kindly read up my past thread before continuing with this thread. Thanks. https://twitter.com/jay_mikee/status/1308411865148674049
Now that we’ve established that not all secular songs are “evil” for a child of God, we have also established that living off of them alone isn’t healthy for our spiritual growth. Now let’s focus on the artists.
Please pay attention.
We have 3 categories:
1a. Secular artists who are unbelievers.
1b. Secular artists that are
Believers (spirit filled, tongue talking or not, isn’t the issue. I mean Christians by religion)

2. Gospel artists. (Song evangelists, ministers, etc )
What’s the difference between these categories? I’ll explain.
Category 1a: is an unbeliever who’s songs are religion-neutral. They have a wide range of songs from nursery melody to a club banger or worse. (As we’ve explained in our previous thread). Hence-secular artist.
Category 1b: Christians who’s songs are religion-neutral (non religious as well). However, because they’re Christians, we don’t expect “immoral” songs from them because Philippians 4:8 and matthew 7:16. So the range is narrower. Hence - Christian secular artist.
Category 2: these are Christians who sing songs inspired by God, inspired by the holyspirit, songs with its root in the word of God. These are Christian/gospel artists. I hope we’re clear on this now.
Sometimes the products of these categories can over lap, but it doesn’t change their tag. Eg. a secular artists singing a gospel song (R.Kelly’s “You saved me”) BUT category 2 can’t imbibe the wide range of Category 1a. (I hope you’re following)
Let’s focus on Category 1b and 2. What makes the Christian secular artist different from the gospel artist?
One sees music as just a profession, a career choice and the other sees music as not just that, but a Calling and a Ministry.
So the question of “does that mean everyone singing secular is of the devil?” is answered already.
You got that? Thank you.
So what makes us “rejoice” for an artists like Chidinma who has openly declared her transition from Category 1 to 2?
You see every child of God has been given the great commission. It’s not Philippians 4:8, I’m talking about Matt 28:16 and Mark 16:15. The task to preach to as many people as we can, to spread the name of Jesus across the world, to disciple, to teach His word.
And what’s interesting is that God has given us gifts and abilities to help push this task further. Like boosters. This doesn’t mean we are all meant to become “missionaries” or “pastors”, but every gift/talent/skill/ability has a purpose in God’s eyes.
It’s okay to say “singing is my profession, if I want to preach I’ll talk about Jesus whenever I can” but think about it, won’t you reach out to more people with your songs especially if you don’t have a platform to preach?
“The gift of a man make the a way for him” to do what?
“...he shall stand before kings and not mare men” to say what?
That’s the bigger picture. Why are we here?
Same way God has placed Christians in top positions of the society, it’s not for show, it’s for impact.
If a gift can pass a message to millions of people, God won’t give you just so you can ONLY sing about flowers and trees. He will give you so you can tell the world about HIM. That’s the bigger picture. He means business.
So it’s not about “singing secular means you’re of the devil” no no. It’s that you’re yet to activate the full potential, the main purpose for which this gift has been given to you by God. The great commission.
Not all christian artist is a gospel artist and that’s not necessarily an evil thing, just like some of us have never preached in our work place BUT every child of God ought to. It comes with the “I am a Christian” job description.
If Chidinma says the devil has been winning too long over her life, it means she has finally realized there’s a higher dimension to the purpose of her gift that the devil didn’t want her to attain.
When then is a secular artist used by the devil?” When their music is used to pass across messages that go against the scripture, promote immorality, social vices, love of mammon, etc.
So it was not meant to talk down on other artists, but a testimony of her new discovery. There’s nothing evil about a Christian singing only (good) secular songs, but it’s an under utilization of the gift. No message is greater or more important than the message of God’s word.
I’ve come to the end. Please note that this thread is for believers. Don’t come with your argumentative self and breeze through three of the tweets only to form an off-point opinion. I won’t block you sha. God bless.
