Everyone should be the hero of their own story.

What’s your story??
I was born in Detroit in 1991 to a Haitian father and African American mother. My father was born in one of the poorest countries in the world and my mother grew up in Detroit at the peak of the civil rights and protest. Yet they somehow met at Harvard Medical School
They had me while they were residents and I lived in a few homes until we settled in Detroit where my grandparents lived. I was the only Black student for the first 7 years of school and had many identity questions. Once in middle school the racism was clear and I transferred
Going to a diverse high school opened my eyes and changed my life. I found my identity confidence as a Haitian & African American and my passion for finance emerged. It eventually led to me working in investment banking after college
I was making good money, even though working long hours, but I kept wondering why every client I had was a White male and why I was the only Black person in a banking group of 45. I absolutely loved finance, but I didn’t like the exclusion of my community. Something felt off
So when I was fortunate enough to attend @HarvardHBS I decided to take @HarlemCapital from a side hustle to my main hustle. @jarridvtingle was my roommate and he decided to join me. Most thought we were ambitious but crazy to invest in POC and women, it was “niche”
Well we raised $12.5M during business school, closed on $40M 6 months after graduating, and raised another $134M 16 months later. We invested in 26 companies with 91% being POC or women and are on our way to deploying $1B+ in 1,000 diverse founders.
Many will doubt you on your path, expect it. You have to be your own hero bc there will be moments your heros don’t support you or even moments you are the villain. YOU ARE A HERO, share your story 👇🏽
