Great seeing Arielle Sheftall's opening keynote for @_CHKD's Youth Suicide conference. Thanks to @youthsuicideres's @YR2Lab for inviting me to give the closing keynote.
Dr. Sheftall notes that there is very little difference in suicide attempts requiring medical treatment by sex in Black high school students. This suggests that they are using similarly lethal means.
Love hearing the background story behind the groundbreaking research that @nationwidekids's Dr. Sheftall and Dr. Bridge have done on racial differences in suicide among children. "We couldn't believe what we found, so Jeff ran the analyses over and over again to confirm."
Dr. Sheftall notes that some of the limited research on suicide in Black youth finds increased risk due to racism/discrimination. Anxiety, not depression, more highly correlated with suicide ideation in Black youth.
Dr. Sheftall highlight's @revdrsherry's faith-based suicide prevention program and Dr. Robinson's 15-week A-CWS program as promising practices for addressing Black youth suicide risk. https://doi.org/10.1002/jcop.22543 She also cautions us from focusing too much on schools.
