singularity as the self which bends over the 'Mirror': a comparative thread.

for those who aren't familiar with the poem, it was written by Sylvia Plath (1932-1960), who was an American poetess and often dealt with the topics of confronting oneself and self-reflection. In 'Mirror', she narrates from the mirror's point of view;+ #3YearsWithSingularity
+how it witnesses the person in front it dissolve from a pretty, young lady into an old woman, despising her appearance as she grows older. Many describe the poem as a metaphor for the rejection of the ugliness of old age; yet sometimes I see it different.+

Today, when I read the poem, I saw it as a rejection of your own deep, inner self; seeing it as ugly, deformed, and an acknowledgement that only a mask, a suppression of it can truly bring happiness to a person. And singularity is the best expression of+ #3YearsWithSingularity
+the harrowing emotion of self-rejection and the wearing of a mask, which is why I feel that the poem and the song compliment each other so much, which is what we'll explore in this thread. #3YearsWithSingularity
The references of the poem in the music video are indeed many, with most restricted to Taehyung in a pool of water as a 'lake'; the poem too uses the device of a lake as a reflective surface, and as an introspective bridge into their minds and selves.+ #3YearsWithSingularity
In most scenes, Taehyung is looking down at the water below him, peering into his reflection; and in the poem the protagonist does it too, looking into her true self and trying to accept the ugliness it has; without realizing the beauty that she carries.+ #3YearsWithSingularity
Another point to be noted is that in the poem, there is a mention of a pink room which was an old pink with patches of paint wearing off of it; and in the MV Taehyung is in a similar kind of room, which gives off an old, nostalgic feel to it; a reference. #3YearsWithSingularity
Moving on the lyrics; unlike the MV, there are a lot of things that can be equated to certain metaphors that the poem has. The song references 'sounds' that haunt them; perhaps it is the mirror that is speaking the truth. The mirror is the bridge that+ #3YearsWithSingularity
+speaks unmisted truths; it is wise and speaks of acceptance to the person; yet the ugliness of truth blinds the person and they wear a mask. But those voices within them are still there; which haunt them like a ghost. Like the song says, 'I cover my ears'. #3YearsWithSingularity
In this particular stanza, the mirror and the lake hold wisdom within themselves; they know the truth, for they are the selves that are being rejected, but there is no recognition by the person. It is dark in their depths; but the person knows them and+

+acknowledges that the mirror, their self in the mirror is important to them. But despite throwing themselves there, there is pain; a rejection that even by confronting they can't accept, and there is weight on one's chest; giving birth to tears. #3YearsWithSingularity
Now, the lake. Remember that both the mirror and the lake are reflective surfaces? Both are the bridge to themselves; discovering the beauty in themselves. 'In the lake there's my face' is the person trying to find bits of what is left of them in+ #3YearsWithSingularity
+desperation; and the mirror, as a lake, aids the person in 'searching my reaches for what she (they) really is (are)'. Both dive within the lakes to find out their truth; the source of the haunting sounds; trying to calm it down and hide the truth+ #3YearsWithSingularity
+of their true selves. They close the mouth of their true selves and their ears to the truths; their inability to accept themselves turning obsessive yet silent, freezing the lake and themselves into it. At first, they see no hope; angry at the mirror+ #3YearsWithSingularity
+and the world around them that asked them to mask up and that lied about the inner self that they were hiding from. However, even within the sadness, there's a slight glimmer of hope; they can find beauty that they've hidden from for so long.+ #3YearsWithSingularity
+The ice will melt, the beauty within them will be accepted, and spring will make them bloom into the loveliest flowers. Until then, there will be the pain of rejection that will keep the ice frozen and them trapped in the maze of hate and the truth will play hauntedly.
