If you are an adult seeking to educate yourself about social justice issues, please understand that it is solely your responsibility to educate yourself.
I understand that not every person has access to the internet, but if you are able to view this tweet, you are capable of making a google search.
The reason I am emphasizing this is because I hear a lot of people blaming their ignorance on not being educated when they were younger.
Once you have the autonomy to educate yourself, there is no excuse for remaining ignorant.
Before I continue:
No one is perfect. No one. We have all done and said things that we are not proud of, and there is no way we can ever be perfect.
Once we accept this, we can view growth and development through a more compassionate lens.

I disagree with cancel culture, because it seeks to destroy a person’s reputation. However, I also disagree with the notion that we have to make it our responsibility to educate people with ignorant beliefs.
We cannot control anyone but ourselves. But, even though we cannot push people to educate themselves, we can open spark conversation/debates and help people find resources.
Not everyone has the patience or ability to educate others. I am half-Korean, so people may expect me to be a resource for educating people on the issues about being mixed race.
But I’m not an expert, and I definitely can’t speak on behalf of every mixed race person.

I dislike the pressure social media has put on POC to be representatives of their ethnicity. Not everyone is familiar with or connected with their ethnicity/culture.
Instead of pretending to understand the struggles of every person on this planet, I am admitting that I don’t fully understand everyone’s experience and I am not a resource that people should turn to.
I don’t feel comfortable speaking up about issues that I have never experienced, because I believe it’s better to listen to the voices of people who have experienced those issues.
I would rather boost/amplify voices that can better articulate and explain a movement’s significance, instead of saying some half-assed statement to make people think I’m woke.
With that being said, I genuinely do want to help make a difference in the world and I believe that starts with educating ourselves. Because once we educate ourselves, we can start making well-informed decisions.
I also want to clarify that I believe there is nothing wrong with wanting to educate people. I value teachers a lot but not everyone has the capacity to be an educator and that’s fine. We have different strengths and weaknesses.
Anyways, I have been rambling for a while now, but the bottomline is:
I believe we need to hold ourselves accountable and take responsibility in educating ourselves. Without self-awareness there can be no growth.

Also, for anyone who reads this thread and has a differing opinion, I am open to hearing your opinion. I know not everyone will agree with what I said, and that’s fine, but all I ask is to be respectful when responding.
