. @BAFTA has come under criticism for not doing proper due diligence before awarding Clarke the award. But the question is what if they had, and then decided not to give him the award.
The big question is "What does Bafta then do?"
As Clarke refutes the allegations, let's talk in the abstract.
If Bafta find out something bad about a potential nominee, who do they report the allegations to?
If they are not criminal - can they report them to the police, and should they?
Do they tell the broadcasters and film studios secretly - effectively creating a secret blacklist of racism/sexism allegations that the accused cannot even defend themselves against?
Do Bafta go to the Guardian themselves and tell them what they have found out? This would create a very strange relationship between Bafta and journalists.
Does Bafta become a publisher themselves?!
