Everyday somebody’s logs on to tweet free career advice for young people, and it’s like call your boss daddy. Forget your friends and family. Eat spreadsheets instead of food. Legally change your name to the name of the business to show loyalty. Skip your funeral for overtime.

If you don’t have clear boundaries with work or if your personal life is of lesser importance to you than your career, I take your advice with a shaker full of salt

So much of the career advice I got in the nonprofit sector was encouraging me to endure the abuse until I eventually aged out of it. All the while, most of the people in the field who were not white cis men were experiencing abuse no matter their age.

And I still hold some resentment from the POC elders who directed me toward more abuse too.
