Welcome (back) to the first “real” post of my @LNeuenkamp guest tweets at @GfoeSoc sharing the ideas of my #MYFUN @MSCActions project @UA_Universidad @Maestrelab

Focus of today: DRYLANDS – why to study and worry about them

Let’ s move to the thread 👇
0/6
Recap-time:
#MYFUN is about understanding how drylands, mycorrhizal fungi, global change, and ecosystem functioning are related.

Summary 👇

1/6 Drylands:
Drylands form under high temperatures & low precipitation, resulting in low fertility and patchy vegetation structure: grass and shrub islands intermingled with bare soil or soil covered by biocrusts.

2/6 Drylands are important!

Because drylands:

1. are large - covering 41% of the world’s surface
2. support livelihoods of 38% of human
population.
3. are home to a vast number of animals and
plants

3/6 Drylands are vulnerable to desertification!

Why? Watch the very nice summary video on this topic by @ftmaestre about his @ERC_Research in @UA_Universidad

4/6 The role of plant composition and diversity…

Decreasing plant diversity and altered plant composition in response to aridity reduces #dryland productivity, and multiple other ecosystem processes (i.e. dryland #EcosystemMultifunctionality), as well as drylands' stability.😨
