I see The North discourse is being reignited in the wake of terrible locals and let me just say this: claiming that the north is turning tory because we're all homeowners is as facile an argument as saying all Londoners are part of the metropolitan elite.
First off, the average house price in the north is literally half of that in the south. The idea northern homeowners on the whole are somehow now more tied to capital interests is...incorrect. In my city you can still buy a nice 2 up 2 down for 70k. Homeownership != affluence.
Second, if we're all voting Tory because of our new-found relationship to capital, you're going to have to explain why Labour policies 2017-2019 polled extremely well here and how Labour mopped up a lot of the kipper vote in 2017.
The real issue ime is that for a very long time our vote has been taken for granted. You may well wonder why Labour has been in decline since the Blair years, and well, it begins with Blair, whose answer to the decimation of industry under thatcher was to give us call centres
The north-south divide in terms of investment and opportunity has continued to deepen, and that affects everyone, regardless of homeownership. The problem is that Labour did nothing to fix that while in power and are offering nothing now. The Tories are. Simple as that.
Everyone knows the tories funnel money and investment into their seats, so is it any wonder that, against Labour which is now offering nothing, people would take the gamble in the hope their lot would be improved. Voter allegiance lasts only as long as your allegiance to them.
This is the most earnest thing I'm going to be posting today, so idk. Enjoy it.
Also, not all of us are homeowners jfc lmao
