A private citizen is said to have expended N16million in an effort to revive all water facilities at the water board and provide clean water to the people of Yola South LGA of Adamawa state, this will mark the end of water injustice to residents of Yola.
Meanwhile, the state Government is spending at least N8.8 billion to build a flyover bridge, a state with no functioning public water system & over 75% poverty index is taking up billion Naira loans not to provide citizens with basic amenities but with facilities like flyovers.
Whether you know it or not, unclean water exposes citizens to deadly diseases such as cholera & malaria parasites, which makes water a right & not a privilege, any governor who doesn't know that is occupying the wrong office.
A significant number of residents in Adamawa have no access to potable water provided by public water authorities. Residents rely on small scale water vendors popularly known as "Mai ruwa" & taps stretched from residences of philanthropic individuals.
My Maternal grandparent's home in Kofar Bayi - close to Lamido's palace have not had municipal water for close to a decade now and my Paternal grandparent's residence in Wuro Hausa had not seen a drop of tap water for almost two decades, both of which are relatively urban areas.
It gets worse when you go to rural areas like Njobolliyo, Shelleng & Michika, you'd find residents collecting water from rivers, perennial streams and unprotected wells which are susceptible to water borne diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery, malaria.
16million X 21 LGA = 336 million.
N336million is only 3.81% of N8.8 billion. Yeah, that's right, it'll cost the government less than 10% of the money being spent on flyover to provide water to citizens in all Adamawa's 21 LGAs but the state government would never give this a try.
As an environmental engineer myself, i can tell you that providing water to citizens is not atomic physics, all it takes are a storage facility, a treatment plant, and a network of distributary pipes across streets, hamlets & villages.
You might think not providing water to citizens & building luxurious structures are a misplaced priority by leaders but i know incompetence whenever i see it.
