A year ago I made a decision to leave my post as an assistant dean for personal/family reasons. Unexpectedly many of my colleagues were inspired by my decision, My decision was easy. Why? I am grounded, I know who I am and what I am dedicated to. A title is irrelevant.
If you have a strong moral compass and are dedicated to something a title is not needed. True leadership is about following your heart. We need leaders that reflect our community and our values. We need to stop promoting people because they "look good on paper".
Too many people are gaming the system. It's not hard to manufacture success. It's time we all demanded more. We need leaders with genuine compassion. Genuine track records of public service with results. It's not enough to "chair" a committee. We are being exploited as a
by our naive willingness to take a resume at face value. Instead, ask people who are "unimportant" in the candidates success - secretaries, people who might have been on the opposite side of an issue. How did they treat them? If you find a problem, that person is NOT a leader.
We need leaders who "GET" it. Compassionate, collaborative NOT subversive, NOT manufactured. Lets stop giving in to crap. This applies to leadership everywhere. Lets really work on choosing the best with REAL evidence. #firecrappyleaders everywhere.
