OK, just over an hour until Jupiter's Legacy S1 drops all over the world so I wanted to share a wee story with you in the meantime plus some pics my old pal Jim Gray sent last night of the billboards in my hometown of Coatbridge...
The reason Big Jim sent me these is that the billboards are in Burnbank St and after my parents died when I was a teenager I moved into a flat here and had pretty much less than no dough, but a plan to be a writer and a small stray cat I had inherited.
The flat was in a block of 12 and mine was by far the worst. I had no kitchen floor, the front door didn't lock and I couldn't afford a fridge, so I kept milk and cheese in plastic bags in a bucket of water on the window ledge.
The building was very run-down, but I had brilliant neighbours and I made great friends there. Cash, however, was super-tight & the only reason I was able to even type up scripts is because my sister would get me paper from work and I used the public library's type-writer.
The stray cat & I would often eat alternate nights and I felt so bad about it I gave the wee guy away to a local farmer I had become friendly with. But I kept typing and got a little interest & by the end of the year had my first sale.
I remember my first cheque was £240 and though it barely made a dent in my debts it was pure gold and I was lucky enough to have the beginnings of a career that has been very good to me.
Big Jim knew the significance of these bill-boards being up in that street and fired these over to me to see. They're up in every country in the world, but nothing means as much as seeing them here where I'd choose whether the cat or I had dinner that night.
So when the show drops in exactly 65 minutes in every country on Earth remember that every name you see on the credits has a backstory and a journey to this point & they appreciate to be doing now what they wanted to do their entire life.
Thank you to all the readers who took me to this point, not just supporting this one franchise or even the other big Hollywood movies, but who bought these books from the beginning. It's been quite a journey.
