Ok so it& #39;s late and I& #39;ve had some wine and I want to just reflect on the unique experience that was Gravitation.
My first exposure to Gravi (lil cringe of an abbreviation, but we& #39;re counting characters here) was an AMV (do kids remember those? longform fancams) - I legit thought Shuuichi was a girl. I thought Shuuichi was a girl up until I watched the first episode, and imagine my surprise.
Honestly, I should start a podcast. Rewatch Gravitation with my gay weeb friends, discuss it. It was so influential and so problematic, simultaneously. Folks were really desperate for any representation in the 00& #39;s. People really thought it was the dawning of mainstream yaoi.
Eiri Yuki was the motherfucking WORST. I hated him, yet still wanted Shuuichi to end up with him. Because I wanted Shuuichi to get what he wanted. If I was Shuuichi& #39;s friend and not a 12 year-old viewer, I would& #39;ve told him to get gone.
Gravi was also the first anime I was actually AFRAID of my mom catching me watching - but iirc, she actually did, and thought Shuuichi was a girl (like me! oh ho ho ho)
More accurately, I should say I was terrified of my mom seeing the MANGA that I borrowed from friends, which was more graphic than the anime (duh)
Gravitation is hazy for me, in retrospect, like most things. I remember being absolutely enamored with Ryuichi. I loved the switch to his stage persona (Britney, anyone?) and Nittle Grasper had the best songs. (wtf? Nittle Grasper? Nettle Grasper? SALAD FINGERS???)
I remember absolutely loving Hiro, too. A good supportive bro, as I recall.
