ART TIPS !! (a thread)

Disclaimer: I forget alot of things (ADHD) so I'm mostly mentioning artists I recently have been watching on youtube! Feel free to add your own tips in the replies!
1: Anatomy

Highly recommend people to use these two for figure drawing:

1. Quickpose: https://quickposes.com/en/gestures/timed

2. Line of action:

Anatomy is something everyone struggles with so my biggest tip for this one is to simplify body parts into shapes! This actually works for anything too!

Shapes are the basics so learning them will be of great help when it comes to simplifying things to understand them better!
Ethan Becker does a really good job explaining this so please watch this video for a more thorough explanation
There's so much more to touch up on anatomy but it might get too long so let's get going to the next one!
2: Lineart

Tip #1: Getting rid of old bad habits and that's petting the line!

Petting the line is when you go over your lineart multiple times and it can make your lineart look really scratchy and hairy!
The main reason beginner artists do this is because going over lines can somewhat feel good and it tricks your brain into seeing something clearer with more lines your eyes can choose from

That's why alot of sketches tend to look better than the final inking!
Tip #2: Don't be afraid to have multiple sketches!

Clean sketches are WAY easier to ink than messy ones!!
Tip #3: Unless you're doing an animation, using varied line weights can help express a drawing more especially with details!
There's more but linking the video I got this from would be better to watch because they also give you a training sheet on how to build line confidence and muscle memory!
3: Colors

There's so much to unpack here lol

First of all, I KNOW ALMOST EVERYBODY HAS WATCHED THIS ALREADY BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T PLEASE DO
Now for the fun things!

STEAL COLOR PALETTES-

well not exactly but studying on how your favorite artists colors their drawings is a really fun thing to do!

i don't usually study color palettes so my best tip for now is experimenting after learning the basics!
If there's artists you admire for their color palettes then study them up and always question on why these colors go together! Maybe they're next to each other in the color wheel, or maybe they complement each other!
I also highly recommend practicing grayscale for a better understanding of color values!
I found this really great video on picking out vivid colors! You don't have to watch the whole video but the general idea is when picking out vivid colors for your palette, using a mid-tone desaturated background can help with that!
I'm not really good with colors myself whenever my colors feel out of place or they don't give the feeling i want my drawing to have, I use filters!

I recommend doing this with finishing touches but just don't overdo them!
4: Lighting and Shadows

Most of these will be coming from this video so I'm putting it here so you guys can watch the whole thing
First, Base/Shade! SO imagine the object you want to shade is in a white room full of white light!

That means your object is gonna look really flat but these shadows is where you start from so looking at them carefully will help alot!
Second, environmental lighting! This is when your object can start to get more depth and this is because it's affected by the environment around them!

Create a new layer and set it blending mode to Multiply!
Third, Subscatter (also known as subsurface scattering)

This is when light passes by a translucent object like our hands! Doing this can make your drawings look more vivid and interesting!

You can do this digitally by adding a new layer and setting the blending mode to Lighten!
Fourth, Indirect light and Highlights!

This establishes the color of your environment and combining it with direct light will make your lighting look even better!

Depending on what color to choose use a normal layer first then experiment on what blend mode suits it!
Highlights are a really fun part for me when it comes to lighting hehe

they're basically what makes an object shine especially things like hair and metal!

I mainly use blending modes Screen and Add for these!
5: Touch-ups and Effects

I used to never do these and it kinda resulted in my drawings becoming bland and uninteresting so I've been working on that!

Anime is a great reference for this particular area as it's used alot in shows and illustrations!
They're basically additional things like floating water droplets or glowing little circles to express a situation or environment more clearly!

Naoki Saito has a correction series in which he actually does this alot please check it out! (it has subs dw)
