A thread on AFO's larger role in Shigaraki's origins.
Before we get into this thread we need to understand two of the qualities that define AFO the most: His meticulous planning and his manipulative nature https://twitter.com/sols99/status/1378353425021235203

Chapter 193 gives us a good look into AFO's manipulative nature.
As Yoichi says, AFO doesn't help people out of the goodness in his heart. He only sees people as pawns that he can use and discard.
He tends at act as a person's last hope only to get them dependent on him.

Meticulous Planning -
Throughout the series there are multiple examples of him planning accordingly to his foresight. He seems to have a backup plan even when things begin to go awry.

From the two tweets above, the fact that AFO just happened to find the grandson of his enemy all alone under a bridge and decided to help him out of the goodness of his heart seems too much of a coincidence.
I believe that the events that took place that day were planned by AFO.
I believe that the events that took place that day were planned by AFO.
Why would AFO do this in the first place?
a.) To play a twisted joke on Nana and All Might
b.) To cultivate Shigaraki into the Symbol of Fear. A vessel of hate that genuinely hates every aspect of the Hero society.
Let's see how AFO wanted to do that.

I'm not the biggest fan of Vigilantes but I liked AFO's explanation of what makes a villain.
What makes a villain is the disparity between an individual & their quirk and their inability to follow the basic quidelines established by the Hero society. That's why kids have quirk

-counselling. AFO made the imbalance within Shigaraki so that he'd turn out to be a villain.
"When an unruly quirks twists a person's will to it's own ends".
We can see this happen when Shigaraki's quirk awakened that night causing him to kill his own family members.

Side Note:
Another thing is that when quirks awaken in children, they don't manifest in a way that is impossible for the child to control. The only exception to this is Eri.
They might cause some harm but it's not like Shigaraki's case where it murderered his entire family.

Of course AFO's plan just doesn't stop there. We see a bloodied Tenko Shimura roaming around the streets searching for help.
Imo this is one of the most important parts of AFO's plan. He could have 'saved' him immediately but he chose to let Tenko wander in despair for a while

This is to achieve 3 things:
a.) To twist Tenko's love for heroes into pure hatred. Tenko looked upto heroes and none of them came to rescue him when he was in peril. Obviously after this incident he'd start resenting them.
We see this resentment multiple times in the manga

b.) To have Tenko hate the inhabitants of the hero society. This is pretty similar to the one above but there's a difference.
Civilians in MHA have relegated the hero work to the Pro heroes and cops. Any civilian who tries to butt in & save people is reprimanded (Gentle & Deku)

Bystander effect + no heroes makes it that no one's there to save Tenko Shimura in his hour of need. This incident is at the core of why Shigaraki hates Hero society and it's inhabitants.
It's imperative to AFO that Shigaraki went through this experience.

c.) To make Shigaraki completely dependent on AFO.
By lending his hand when no one would Shigaraki greatly trusts AFO. Another classic example of AFO's manipulative behaviour.
If you guys remember, Shigaraki used to use AFO as an emotional crutch when something went wrong

This is a by product of AFO being Tenko's saviour.
By appearing before him when no one did, AFOs starts laying the seeds for his new vessel of hate. You can see more examples of his manipulation:
Like the time he broke down Shigaraki's morality

I feel like there are bunch of clues showing AFO's involvement. The first one is pretty obvious.
Right before everything went down. Right before Tenko awakened his quirk, there was a man who dropped him off at his house. This man has an attire similar to that of AFO.

At this point we didn't know that this was Nana's hand. Shigaraki also didn't know that.
But AFO knew that this was Nana's hand. There was no reason to give Tenko this unless he already knew that Tenko was Nana's grandson. The way that all the hands are laid out gives me

-an impression that all of this premeditated by AFO.
I'm pretty sure that he would have covered up the scene at the Shimura Household to prevent the authoriries from finding out what happened there.
That's why everyone was pretty shocked at the reveal at Kamino.

Which leads me to my next point:
The only thing that is consistent with the Hero Arcs is the amount of times we see Heroes on patrol.
It's pretty suspicious that there wasn't any heroes on patrol that day. If he killed his own family then there would be people searching for him

So it makes no sense that Tenko wasn't able to find anyone. I believe that AFO thwarted the people that were coming after him.
I can imagine AFO and the doctor observing him from afar like this, watching Tenko's faith in heroes and hero society go down

My suspicions started after I read this page. The words AFO said made me believe that the whole event was all planned out
There's zero chance that AFO picked a kid of the steet and decided to turn him into a symbol of fear. There's way too many coincidences.

Why is this important?
As of now, Shigaraki is engaged in a tug of war with AFO over his own body. I believe that this piece of information would be crucial to his emancipation.
Shigaraki then would see his master's manipulation and will discard him as a crutch

It will be an important step in Shigaraki's journey of becoming a full fledged villain.
To what extent did AFO have control in Shigaraki becoming a villain?
I don't think that AFO planned everything out from the time Tenko was born. I think that he happened to find-

-Nana's remaining relatives. He used two things that were out of his scope to his own advantage:
a. Kotaro's disdain for Heros which was due to Nana abandoning him when he was young
b. Shigaraki's inner itch which he then later manipulates into an impulse for destruction.

I'm gonna end this circle by going back to the start. Why did he do all of this?
As we found out during the war, Shigaraki was nothing but a pawn that he cultivated. If I were to guess, he's going to use Shigaraki's body to capture OFA.
