A sixth grade student pulled a handgun out of her backpack and open fire today at her middle school in Idaho, wounding 2 students and 1 adult.
This is NOT the lead story for the news outlets. Maybe because it’s blasé that there’s another school shooting. Y’all, stop a second and do the math.
The student was a 12-13 year old. Who had access to a handgun and brought it to school with intent to harm others. How awful that a child in our society feels like a GUN is the right answer to a problem.
A child who is not legally allowed to sign up for social media accounts. Not old enough for a drivers’ permit. And I know where the argument will go.
“this child had mental issues” they’ll say. Or “thoughts and prayers”. But when are those enough when a 12-year old has access to a gun.
And who subdued her? A teacher. An educator put themselves in harms way to keep this child from hurting anyone else AND kept her safe until the police arrived.
Can you imagine being that teacher? Who has likely spent the year struggling with the pandemic. In a district that is probably stressed. It’s National Teacher Appreciation week.
So here’s the point of the thread. Lock up your damn guns and keep them out of the hands of your kids. Also, teachers are grossly undervalued and under paid.
No child should have the weight of access to a gun to solve any problem, no matter how big or small. This decision will follow this child the rest of her life. And could have been avoided if proper firearm precautions were followed.
And when you offer up thoughts and prayers, offer them up for the student who did it. And maybe get enraged that another school shooting happened today that didn’t need to. #GunReformNow #TeachersAppreciationWeek #ProtectTheKids
