Andy of @B2PSeattle reads a letter from someone who has been imprisoned in OH since 1978. Through books, he has traveled around the world. "They [both B2P and books] have made my life worth living."
In 2018, the IL DOC allocated $268 to buy books for its prison libraries for the entire year.
"23 hours a day in my cell w/o a TV or anyone to write to is monotonous. Without @B2PSeattle I wouldn't get any mail at all. Thank you for giving the mail clerk the chance to stop at my door."
Some prisons have libraries, but $0 in their budget for books. (I remember getting requests at @BtBsNYC from COs who doubled as prison "librarians" asking us to send free books bc they had no money to purchase any.)
In 2019, @B2PSeattle did public records requests and found that 2 prison libraries in WA were open for only 20% & 30% of their scheduled time.
The Iowa Dept of Corrections banned books from programs like @B2PSeattle & @BtBsNYC and only allows books to be ordered from 2 vendors. If a person doesn't have $$ to buy books, guess they won't be reading.
Once, a book with maps of the moon was rejected from a prison because the maps "might aid an escape attempt."
Each month, @B2PSeattle gets 1200 requests for books from people in prisons across the nation.
