So I took Mom to see a very specific type of provider today @UFHealth. However, as I sat in the lobby I couldn't believe the office was blaring Fox News with a sign attached to the TV warning visitors not to change the channel. My Mom was even more agitated than I was.
When invited to the back with Mom, the very pleasant provider asked of course, how we were doing. I responded, "I'd be doing much better if you didn't have Fox News blaring in your lobby". The appointment went well the provider was phenomenal. However, I couldn't wait to get home
and make a telephonic complaint via patient relations. The process was easy & the coordinator was very professional. I was asked if I had tried to speak with the staff about changing the channel. I responded, "No", then broke it down.
Number one, the staff member or members who've allowed Fox News to play in their clinic know it's offensive & they don't care. That was evidence by the warning sign not to change the channel. Further, this particular campus serves lots of low income, marginalized people.
Hypertension & other types or heart disease are often stress related for communities of color. This is often precipitated by racism & discrimination. Is it really good health advocacy to subject this group of people to racism, bigotry & xenophobia in your lobby then wonder why
their blood pressure or pulse is sky high when they're finally evaluated at that same appointment? The minority employees who have to listen to the Fox News vitriol should also be considered. Employees are entitled to their personal beliefs but safe spaces for patients should
come first. No employee should be using their position or influence to push political agendas at their workplace. When in doubt health education & promotion TV is always appropriate in this setting. Please do better.
