Ok, here's something that is analogous to the whole "it's basic biology/that's just science" argument against trans lived experience. *THREAD*

The assumption that the gender binary is "just science" is rooted in the concept that the science you learned is a fully accurate... 1/9
representation of science as we know it. This is inherently false, and here are a few examples:

We have known for DECADES that the Bohr model of the atom is a ludicrously inaccurate representation of what is ACTUALLY going on in an atom, but we still teach it through high... 2/9
school chemistry and physics because it is a decent simplification of the atom that gets the points across that are useful for non-physicists/chemists. It's useful to provide basic understanding of generalized concepts but if you said that quantum physics was wrong because... 3/9
you were taught the Bohr model and "that's just science!" don't be surprised if you get academically bitch-slapped by every scientist in the room.

Most education in basic physics is Newtonian physics. For the record, these physics break down WITHING OUR OWN ATMOSPHERE... 4/9
GPS relies on precise timing that completely fails using Newtonian physics, and requires relativity to operate. But you don't need an understanding of general relativity to get from your home to the airport - so we teach Newtonian physics in school, but if you said... 5/9
that relativity was bullshit because you were taught Newtonian gravitational theory and "that's just science!" be prepared for every pilot, ship captain, physicist, astronomer, etc to put you in your place.

Biology is NOTORIOUS in the sciences for having VERY few hard and... 6/9
fast rules. Grizzly bears and polar bears are different species, yet their offspring are able to reproduce, breaking one of the few agreed-upon rules of differentiation of species.

Biologists acknowledge SEVERAL different biological sexes both in humans and other species... 7/9
and that gender and sex are not always congruent. Furthermore, intersex people exist and defy the neat lines of the binary we teach in elementary school science.

Just because you were taught a VASTLY oversimplified explanation of science because the point wasn't to cover... 8/9
the entire spectrum of detailed biological models, but to demonstrate the GENERALIZATION that helps to categorize the majority and understand the BASICS of reproductive properties in a way that is easier to understand.

THAT'S "just science". 9/9
