What this means is that, if the US had never invaded Taiwan during WWII, Taiwan would probably not be ruled by the ROC in the present. If Taiwan had remained part of Japan, it may have been invaded by China at a later date, albeit with Japanese rather than US involvement.
What this also means is that the US's present involvement in the defence of Taiwan can be seen as "cleaning up after itself" following almost a century of failed Taiwan policy, first under Japanese rule, then under ROC rule, and then under the threat of a PRC invasion.
