🧵
Over the last several months I’ve spoken with several female candidates about what to expect during the campaign and as a member of council. I’m hearing common concerns about on-line bullying targeting women.
It might help to understand that the bullying is often targeted and organized, meant to overwhelm you and break your spirit. Don’t let it. These keyboard warriors are often fake accounts or partisan bullies who cower behind anonymity.
A few tips: Stay focused on your campaign. If it’s becoming distracting or upsetting, appoint a trusted volunteer to manage your accounts. I believe that a respectful workplace extends to social media, so I try to make my socials a safe place for discussion and respectful debate.
I don’t mind when someone disagrees with me but you don’t get to call me a c**t. Zero tolerance on racism, bigotry, or misogyny. Zero. I report and block all fake accounts and ones that threaten, intimidate, and violate common decency.
Campaigns are fun and inspiring. You will meet amazing people and learn a lot about yourself, Calgarians, and how cities work. The job as a councillor will be exciting and rewarding. Your work and accomplishments will define you and the bullies will disappear without trace.
A note to the gents: Please step up and condemn bullying when you see it, whether it’s in the workplace, on the street, or in politics. It shouldn’t fall on women, LGBTQIA2S+ folks, or BIPOC to defend themselves and each other. We all need allies.
