In this day and age, Is the Pen Mightier than @NotionHQ or @RoamResearch ?

The answer will surprise you

A survey of 2000 people in England revealed a surprising fact:

one in three respondents had not written anything in the past six months.

On average, they had last written anything 41 days ago!

Writing, it seems, is on its way out.
You can type a lot faster than you can write. The singular reason why laptops have become commonplace in classrooms.

I have been struggling with a system to capture fleeting thoughts and ideas.

And this is what I learnt:
The brain has two modes of operation while capturing ideas:

The first is "Data storage" - Your ability to remember discreet facts such as dates, etc.

In this aspect, both the keyboard and the pen perform similarly.
The more interesting aspect is the "Encoding" function.

Because we can think (or hear) a lot faster than we can write, the brain is forced to accumulate the information, reduce them to a more concentrated form that can be written.
This is a source of all creativity.

Our ability to acquire vast amounts of information from what we read, listen and remember and produce a distillation of the essence we wish to convey.

Writing, it seems, is the ideal medium to encourage that superpower.
"Handwriting is the result of a singular movement of the body, typing is not." - Roland Jouvent.
There is the medium as well.

A digital tool will force you to into a standardized way of interaction.

A paper allows you unrestricted freedom to structure your thoughts with ease. You can rotate, scribble, draw, highlight the message you wish to convey or remember.
And it's very personal.

I love the feel of my diary, the craftsmanship of the binding, and the paper's quality.

And, of course, my writing instrument.

I came across a letter written years ago by my wife. It brings back vivid memories. An email is an inferior substitute.
Typing allows us to keep with the frantic pace of our thoughts.

Just maybe, we will need to change the tool to slow us down that will allow us to be more creative.

What do all of the users of @NotionHQ and @RoamResearch think of this ?
