The scene where Ed wakes up crying after the Kristen incident, Riddler shows up, laughing. Ed says "I thought I banished you for good" and Riddler says "Almost. Love of a good woman and all." This goes with the already known theory that Ed splits when he's stressed. #Gotham 1/?
Riddler was created after all because Ed was constantly bullied, told that he was weird, a freak. Ed's bad with social cues and signals, of which are autistic traits (it wasn't confirmed in the show, but Cory did his research). Riddler comes out when emotions get too much.
When he was with Oswald, he never split EVER once, because he felt safe, secure, happy. He had an actual friend. Then Isabella comes along, and although he doesn't split, he hallucinates his dead girlfriend when he's reminded of her, which I guess still sort of counts?
Ed fell apart after Oswald's "death", taking drugs, hallucinating, not sleeping, the works. He then became Riddler, fully embracing that side of him, which I believe is another split, and remaining there, as he doesn't like being called Ed, insisting that it wasn't his name.
Post-frozen Ed, Ed is just... Ed, but less, his mind deeply fractured. A shell. There's no Riddler, and Ed tries to become a better person, happy, for a time, until he begins hallucinating Riddler again, scared at what he'll do if he takes control over his body.
Arkham scene, and Riddler's free again, locking Ed out. However, Ed's infatuation for Lee has him bleeding into Riddler's psyche. Not exactly a split, but not fully one-sided.
It gets even worse when Riddler starts seeing Ed in the mirror, mocking him, that he's helping the poor, because of a woman that he supposedly doesn't love, because that's Ed, not Riddler.
Ed says "Does that sound like you to you? Because to me, that sounds like me," signaling that Riddler isn't quite himself if Ed is having an effect on him, also saying "There'll be no telling when you end, and I begin." Was Ed/Riddler truly comfortable with Lee if he's splitting?
Not sure what happened in season 5, since it was rushed to wrap things up, but I would have liked to see the evolution more of Ed and Riddler finally coming together. He seems to constantly "split" tho, without realizing it, telling me he's already merged, even if partially.
I don't know if it was because of what Hugo did, or the fact that he died (or very nearly died) and was resurrected that affected his psyche, but he did just seem to embrace both sides of himself, both the quirky nerd and flamboyant villain that he is.
I wish I could say that he doesn't split again because he's in Oswald's company (eventually), but it's also possible that this is the case. Or it could just be that Ed and Riddler are finally accepting their other half.
Freaking love this scene!
