Ugh stop saying pro-shots are the end-all-be-all, Broadway stans. Go see a regional production of that musical you like in your community when theatre comes back. There are talented folk in your area who deserve to shine.
Part of what's magical about theatre is that it cannot always live on. It's transitory, it exists as legend, and then YOU get to find your own way to make it live on.
Pro-shots are fun, but the amount of people on this app saying "bring this show back to Broadway for a pro-shot" rather than "oh yay, now regional theatre & educational theatre can have this show. NOW I CAN DO THIS SHOW." bums me out.
Anyway, Beetlejuice will have a more-than-healthy-life in regional theatres & high schools. You'll see it again. And the producers will make all their money back, cuz licensing it where the dough lies. So... win-win?
You can like pro-shots. They are fun! We wouldn't have all seen Into the Woods in the 80s without them. But I hate this mentality that pro-shots are the only reason mainstream musical theatre should exist.
(from the Broadway twitter stans, that is. you knooooow who you are)
I got to see the Pasadena Playhouse Little Shop of Horrors, and I flippin' LOVE that there's no pro-shot. 😜 Ok but trolling aside, Pasadena is my hometown & seeing art IN your community FOR your community is so very special.
Remember there was that basic-ass version playing Off-Bway at the same time that was just...business as usual Little Shop? The PPH version wouldn't have happened in the NYC bubble, and it was allowed to take risks because of that.
Ooh. Something just hit me. Pro-shots used to be made by the likes of PBS for preserving works seen as culturally relevant and important. And they still do (Great Performances series) and I love them! Now it's like... a business cuz Disney is in the game. 😐
