Make no mistake: Josh Duggar isn't in a cell right now because there are a great many people who still, even right this second, think that what he's done, what he did, is no big deal.
Many evangelicals truly don't think abusing children is that big of a deal, so long as they're the ones doing it. They cover it up, they hush up victims, they guilt and manipulate survivors, and they pretend it never happened.
Arranged marriages, teenage brides, silence about assault, protection of perpetrators: this goes on all the time. Protestants had a whole lotta snickers and laughs about Catholics and their priest problem while evangelical churches were (and are) rotting from the inside.
You can see Satanic Panic, and its dark Q sequel, as (partly) the screeching guilty conscience of parents who either knew, or suspected, what was going on within their ranks, and spat bile at the innocent. Satanic Panic was a means of venting steam. It's happening again w/Q.
