The bar exam process was the most stressful, anxiety-provoking, lonely time of my life. I studied for two bar exams, but only took one, during a pandemic. All while far away from my family.
The legal field was built by white people in the furtherance of their status in society and it continues to serve that function today.
Gatekeeping mechanisms put in place by people who feared the success of those that do not look like them are alive and well.
As this new generation of attorneys enters practice, I’m confident that we will embody the change we so desperately needed in our times of struggle. We will be better for the generations that come after us.
The bar exam does not test competency, it tests privilege.
86% of attorneys are white. The legal system that constantly fails people of color cannot and will not be reformed if this does not change.
Mentor students of color. Support them financially. Do not discourage them from changing a system simply because “this is how it has always been.”
Abolish the bar exam. Seek equitable methods of licensure. Start now.
