duke's not known as a startup factory like stanford.

but duke '08-'12 has produced 4 unicorns—coinbase, airtable, cameo and plaid—along with a bunch of up and comers.

here's the path their founders took from duke to $1b 👇
in 2005 @howietl joined @DukeU's class of '09 to study mechanical engineering. he was only 16.
at 20, he started etacts, a social crm which was backed by @ycombinator and acquired within a year by @salesforce.

he launched @airtable in 2013 with fellow duke alums @aofstad and @emmettnicholas. it's now valued at $5.77b
@max_hodak '12 studied biomedical engineering @DukeU.

while at duke he founded and ran myfit, a higher ed analytics company later acquired by naviance, and went deep on brain-machine interfacing in prof. @MiguelNicolelis's lab
after graduating, he launched transcriptic (now @StrateosLab), a robotic cloud lab for biology.

in 2016 he co-founded @neuralink with (among others) @elonmusk to develop implantable brain-machine interfaces. he's just announced his departure from the company
@zachperret '10 was president of @dukeunion. he studied physics, chemistry and biology @DukeU
he went the consulting route, joining bain after graduation, then co-founded @Plaid in 2012 with a fellow consultant. plaid was acquired by visa in 2020 for $5.3b
@FEhrsam '10 was one of the few software entrepreneurs who actually studied computer science at @DukeU (along with econ).

before that, he was a semi-professional gamer (america's army, call of duty modern warfare and world of warcraft)
post-graduation, he worked as a trader at goldman, then co-founded @coinbase in 2012 which brought together his cs and finance backgrounds.

@DukeU was an early investor which netted ~$500M at coinbase's ipo.

fred left cb to start crypto investment firm @paradigm
@nealjean1 '10 studied econ and math @DukeU, writing his senior thesis on guaranteed contracts in the nba
neal did another bachelor's from @GeorgiaTech and then a phd from @Stanford in electrical engineering.

in 2019 he co-founded @ycombinator-backed @beaconsai, a mobile website builder for tiktok that's growing 3x MoM.

@kmin thought she wanted to join the foreign service when she entered @DukeU's class of '08. she studied french and political science at duke but ended up changing career directions
after stints at mckinsey and the clinton health access initiative, she launched online career platform @TheMuse in 2011 backed by @ycombinator.

the muse has raised ~$30M and has 150+ employees. in 2017 she and her co-founder wrote a bestselling guide to the modern workplace
while studying history @DukeU, @Mr312 '10 started his first venture -- spartan entertainment, a facebook group that grew to dominate duke's nightlife scene.
he worked as a cboe options trader and @LinkedIn as an account exec, then co-founded @bookcameo in 2016. cameo is now valued at just over $1b
