Frustrated that the (huge) cost of childcare and the career sacrifices of having a small child is still seen as a “woman’s issue”. Where are the fathers in this? Is it because their salary tends to be higher (yay gender pay gap) so they don’t go part time after the kid is born?
Why am I not reading pieces by fathers of small children discussing the struggles of balancing job and childcare, especially when it comes to kids being off sick from school or unexpectedly sent home? Why does it seem like only mothers are having to fight for job flexibility?
WHERE ARE THE WORKING FATHERS AND WHY DO THEY SEEM TO BE GETTING OFF SCOTT-FREE WITH THEIR CAREERS INTACT
Would be great to see commissioning editors get some fathers to write about the struggles of being a working *parent*. Genuinely. I need to know that this isn’t still just shit for women
Anecdotally, a friend with a baby under 1 has had to go part-time because she couldn’t commit to always “being reliable”; meanwhile her husband has been promoted and now works even longer hours because she thinks his firm now takes him more seriously as a “committed provider”
Honestly, no wonder the birth rate is falling. Between housing crisis, motherhood penalty and cost of childcare, most of the girls I grew up with are looking at what seem like our available options and thinking, yeah fuck that. And most of the guys *are not*
If having a child means going part-time and essentially ending up financially reliant on a partner (divorce rates being what they are, too) or losing a fortune overall every year thanks to full-time childcare... then seriously what the fuck?
Women in my age bracket are having these conversations *constantly*, and many I know are making career decisions with motherhood in mind. And it seems like men... are not. Could say that’s because of biology - they have longer - but they’re dating women our age, so they don’t?
Please don’t tell us we can “have it all”. Tell us how.
