This is such an important point. The far-off scenarios here of a sci-fi dystopian economy are grim, but even the short term implications are stark. Just take self driving cars. Past technological improvements have tended to increase economic opportunities over time.... https://twitter.com/carlquintanilla/status/1390247043856207872
But what’s different now is the sheer speed of change. Imagine self driving comes on line soon and is widely adopted. There are 3.5 million truck drivers in this country. What happens if you put them all out of work in the space of a half decade?
Add 200,000 taxi drivers and a half million bus drivers to the total. What options the millions of newly unemployed have? What will that do to the economy? What will that do to our politics and society?
Now think about what AI will do to the white collar economy. Your bachelor’s degree largely exempted you from the impacts of globalization. You will not be exempt from the impact of AI.
My point is just this: globalization and rising inequality has had a radicalizing effect on our politics. But the changes to come will be much bigger, faster + more disruptive. They will upend our expectations about how society should be structured + what is fair in a democracy.
I don’t have any solutions or answers. But people should be thinking about this - especially the people who are developing these technologies and new economic realities.
