Before I start, I know there are some slow, thick-skulled fans who might think I’m focusing blame on certain players/manager. Let me clear it up for you, I am not blaming anyone exclusively, this was a collective failure of tactics & performance. No one is cherrypicked here.
Selection I
Three at the back, with Ramos who barely played this year starting, was already questionable. Add on top of it having Vinni, the LW, play on the Opposite side as a position he Never played when Nacho & Odriozola were available, that just killed us before we start.

The dummies at UEFA thought we’re playing 433 which would’ve been much more rational but we played pretty much like this. Isolated players, clueless CBs wandering forward. It was like watching sweepers from a 1978 retro match. It was a disaster.

The Spaces I
This is what confused me the most. Majority of the game, whether we had possession or were defending, we left Massive amounts of space in favor of clumping like ant colonies. No cohesive transition was possible with this much space left in front.

How many times can you recount when Benz, Eden, Kroos, Mendy, Modric & Nacho clumped up on the left flank like they were having their own private picnic, leaving massive space in the middle unoccupied (albeit by the CB, Militao!). Again, no cohesion whatsoever.

However, even after clumping, we were able to create a chance out of this somehow when we pulled attention away from Benz. Imagine the space Hazard/Vinni would’ve had on the far flank unmarked if we didn’t clump instead of leaving Benz with a looseball header he barely got to
The Spaces III
We are 1 down & need a goal, yet our midfield & attack is practically inexistent in the middle, clumping yet again. A second after this shot, Chelsea gets a counter because we have no clue what to do with the ball.

Petty Mistakes I
So many chances, from freekicks, corners or ideal crossing scenarios, we wasted because Ramos shoved a player or a Chelsea man got trampled. This could’ve been a perfect cross into the far post if we didn’t needlessly foul the opposition

Petty Mistakes II
From Nacho ground & pounding James Charles like it’s a UFC title bout, to Kroos slide tackling & missing the ball, to Case just missing standing tackles left & right, our aggressive nature was ultimately a huge contributor to our downfall. We lacked Composure.

Defence Disaster I
Only reason we didn’t lose 8-0 is Courtois. Count them. On every counter attack, which we knew Chelsea was gonna play, half our “3 at the back” wasn’t even At the Back. Vinni, the RWB, barely got inside the box. Both goals were right flank unmarked man goals

Look at the space we’re leaving behind. Our CBs walking into the midfield, clumping, & contributing absolutely nothing just to have Havertz, Werner & Kanté run circles around them. Beyond me how we only conceded 2 goals with that set up

And literally 6 mins later we do the same mistake but even worse. The shot only has Ramos & Nacho running for their lives. Mendy, Militao barely near the ball, Vinni not even in the picture. Courtois should be furious.
And this is the best one, it sums up everything. A 3 on 2 counter, and who is there to stop it? Asensio & Fede. Not Mili, Ramos, or Nacho. If you can’t string two passes together & keep conceding counters, shouldn’t you just sit back & let the midfielders do their job??
Defence Disaster III
The second goal, Mount unmarked when we have 4 defenders in the box. How do you not look back, notice a blue shirt in your box & not mark him? Also again, this would’ve been avoidable if we actually had a RB marking the far post.

RWB?
What was Vinni’s role? Attack? Defend? Or both? Because i saw neither. He was constantly isolated. Whenever he had the ball, he dribbled twice, then either passed it back or attempted a cross that was blocked. Say whatever you want, but Nacho/Odri shouldve played there.

And this isn’t a dig at Vinni, you put any LEFT WINGER in a position Like this & theyll be absolutely clueless as to what to do. Let alone against a Counter Attacking team like Chelsea. Terrible choice, terrible selection.
We had 62% possession, we had 629 passes 400 more than Chelsea, yet we had half their total attempts. This just speaks volumes about how useless ball retention is when all you do is pass it back & wait for a mistake to happen.
And you could blame Hazard for his lack of contribution all you want, he had a bad game sure & I criticized him, but he ran more than any other one of our players & the main reason he couldnt do anything is because no one could even pass to him. He & Benz were completed isolated.

Do you see the trend here? The moment we face a slightly defensive & organized team we cannot do anything attack wise. This transfer window we need to go all out. Full squad refurbishment.

At the end of the day, despite the disaster of a game, I am still proud we made it this far in the face of all the injuries & bad luck we endured this season. Heads up high & focus on the league now.
