Comments on the June 4th vigil case which @joshuawongcf and others are jailed:
“Hong Kong courts are compromised. It’s unimaginable that the democratic campaigners who merely exercised their rights to protest and assembly peacefully would be sentenced to jail for up to a year.
Hong Kong had been the only place to commemorate the fallen in June 4 Tiananmen Massacre for more than 30 years. The sentencing itself expresses a message that even the court is convinced that Hong Kong people do not have the natural rights to continue the Vigil Night,
and deterring sentencing is needed to punish the activists who lighted a candle. The court does not take the rights of people into account, and turns a blind eye to the human rights violations committed by the authority. The decision to ban the vigil was unjustifiable.
The court keeps increasing the length of imprisonment for protestors and sees it as a pathway for a society with fewer conflicts. It’s wrong — the only way to achieve harmony is to hold the powerful accountable. Now the courts are turned into weapons against the powerless.
I could've been there, sitting behind bars, if I had not left HK. I understand how it feels to be in prison. I am devastated to see my friends sitting in the box being sent to jail, yet it makes me more determined to fight for Hong Kong and persist. We will not give up."
