i really hate the way people use “oppression olympics” to shut down discussions of differences in levels of oppression as if flattening out oppression & acting like all oppression is equally bad will do anything but throw the most oppressed people under the bus.

also the fact that a good chunk of the people crying oppression olympics for talking about my personal experiences with stigma against autism vs stigma against psychosis turned around & started minimizing & denying the stigma against psychosis says a lot.

if you scream “oppression olympics” when you see someone talking about facing a greater degree of oppression/stigmatization bc of X than bc of Y & then start going on how X really isn’t all that oppressed/stigmatized especially compared to Y, then you just wanted to silence them

the fact that multiple people got mad at me for supposedly saying that psychosis is more heavily stigmatized across the board than autism (i didn’t, i said autism isn’t the one most stigmatized thing & that for me personally stigma against psychosis is worse) seemed to think…

…that eugenicists don’t want to wipe out people with psychosis & other disorders that are considered “dangerous”, only autistics is genuinely horrifying to me. that tell me that *at best* they’re willing to ignore eugenicists going after people with “dangerous disorders”

at worst they support the idea that our disorders/neurotypes are inherently bad & dangerous & should be eliminated.

either way, their primary motive wasn’t to fight against “oppression olympics”, but to silence someone who talked about experiences that don’t fit their narrative

i find it unlikely that any of those people would have thrown a fit about me saying flat out that autism is more stigmatized than adhd or depression across the board, but of “oppression olympics” was really the concern then surely that would be a problem too?

of course, there’s ample evidence to support the claim that autism is more stigmatized than adhd & depression. you’d be hard pressed to deny it.

but when i say that autism isn’t more stigmatized than psychosis (which is NOT saying it’s necessarily less stigmatized) & than for me personally the stigma against psychosis is worse, that’s suddenly a problem & the solution is to minimize & deny stigma against psychosis.

of course there’s many things that could be substituted in place of psychosis here, i’m only saying that bc that’s the one people decided to harass me for talking about my experiences with. npd & schizospec disorders are some that come immediately to mind.

they could have easily done the same with my thread about how one particular incident (out of many) of anti-bpd stigma was worse for me personally than all the anti-autism i’ve ever dealt with. thankfully they didn’t find that one, bc i was talking about something deeply personal

i was accused of ableism just for saying autism isn’t the most stigmatized disorder/neurotype & talking about my own experiences, and that’s also troubling.

it’s as if in order to properly address the stigma & oppression against autism we need to position it as having it the worst out of all disorders/neurotypes which not only isn’t true but also directly contributes to the problem of some autistics defending against anti-autistic…

…ableism by contributing to the stigmatization & oppression of other disorders. there’s a lot of ways that happens & i don’t really want to get into details here because that’s a whole other set of threads on its own.

but it’s difficult if not impossible to address that if we buy into the idea that autism is uniquely oppressed above & beyond anything else.

and pretending that the eugenicists who want to “cure” autism don’t have other conditions just as much if not more will only make it harder to combat eugenics as a whole. which means it’s going to end up hurting autistics along with all the other things that are being erased.
