''God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds' Hebrews 1:1-2 NKJV
In the Old Testament, God spoke majorly through the prophets to the people. Whenever the people need direction or guidance, He used the prophets as His mouthpiece in guiding the nations.
The likes of Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, Jeremiah were used by God to give instruction to kings and nations and to make His mind known to the people.
We would observe through scriptures that the era of the prophets began when the law was given, specifically from the days of Moses, the prophets were the custodians of the law, that is why we would always find statements like, 'the Law and the prophets' in scriptures.
Example Luke 16:16 which says,

'“The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it'
We can also observe through scriptures that right from creation, God designed that man should communicate with Him freely, Adam, Enoch, the patriarchs etc.  all enjoyed a cordial relationship with God, speaking with Him directly.
According to the scriptures, from the inception of the new dispensation (The New Testament), the dynamics changed, now God speaks through His Son (the Word)
'God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds' Hebrews 1:1-2 NKJV
We know His Son Jesus is the Word through which He made the worlds,
'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made'. John 1:1-3 NKJV
In other words, God speaks now to His people through His Word, through the knowledge of His Word which is also His will for us, we can never be stranded. Yes, He speaks through His Spirit, through an inward witness, through revelations or dreams or even through an inspired word.
However, nothing contradicts His Word which is our ultimate guide and proof of His Wil for us.
Even though prophets are among the gifts Jesus gave to the Church for the equipping of the saints, to edify the Church and also serve as God's mouthpiece to the nations, still they speak in accordance and alignment with God 's Word.
'And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ" Ephesians 4: 11-12 NKJV
Then why do some Christians still seek prophets to know God's Wil for them?

Are you a child of God, have you received Christ as your Lord and Savior?
Then your relationship with God is no longer dependent on the ministry of the prophets, God has designed that you communicate directly with Him in prayer and seek to know His will via His Word.
Stop seeking prophecies from prophets, many have pursued that route and got themselves doomed.
