things about adhd that arent glamorized on the media : a thread.
1. school
School mixes in with a ton of our issues such as behavioral problems, impulsivity, lack of staying on task, etc. We often space out during class and cannot get ourselves to focus- no matter what we try. Along with our inability to stay organized we often lose
important schoolwork or papers that need to get signed. We also can have trouble staying in one position for a long period of time so sitting down in a seat for around an hour can come as a struggle to us. Especially when our teachers don't allow us to get up.
We also have trouble comprehending things so if we're reading a paragraph, whereas a neurotypical would read it once and be able to understand, we have to read it 5+ times to fully understand it. Focusing on schoolwork isn't a simple, 'put the phone down and keep it silent or
listen to calming music' thing, its a 'if i start at 3pm i should get this done by 12am' type deal.
2. Time management skills
Those are a bust for us. This ties in with school. Since we have such poor time management skills, we often fail to meet the deadlines for schoolwork.
3. Relationships
Whether its a romantic, family, or friend relationship, ADHD tends to impact them all. We have trouble maintaining all of our relationships due to our irritability, lack of paying attention, impulsive talking and forgetfulness, etc. We may also have poor social
skills which causes us to have poor communication and unable to talk with our relationships.
3. Problematic / Risk taking behavior
Since we tend to be so impulsive, this may make us more risk taking. This can make us break societal rules + norms. Our risk taking behavior may come to substance abuse, reckless driving, etc.
4. Social Isolation
Sometimes, out of nowhere, we feel the need to isolate ourselves and cut off communication from loved ones. This ties in with our relationships and why maintaining relationships can come as a difficulty to us.
5. Eating Patterns
Our eating patterns are all over the place. Whether its the fact we may eat at 'Unproper' times (ex : eating lunch at 2pm and then eating dinner at 10pm) or maybe not at all. We may forget to eat that day or our appetite may just be at a loss.
6. Poor Sleeping
This can come to anyone really but its incredibly common in people with ADHD. Sleeping is literally a game of chance. Its 'Wonder if i'm going to sleep at a decent time tonight, get 2 hours of sleep, or none at all?'. We've tried every trick in the book. The
breathing exercises, the calming music, the counting tricks, you name it i can guarantee we've tried it. The fact we hear every noise and we can't 'shut' our brain off so thoughts come and leave our brain like lightning makes sleeping such a hard task to accomplish.
// tics
7. Tics
Whether it's humming, impulsively moving a body part, clearing our throat, etc, we have tics! And we cant control them! As much as we want to stop, we can't. We constantly get told we're annoying or to stop for our tics although it's something thats
quite literally impossible to control. Holding in our tics can cause us physical pain as well and make us feel unwell.
8. Talking a lot
We tend to talk a ton, often cutting off the person who was previously talking. This causes irritation in the person who was talking beforehand or paint us as 'annoying'. Although we can't help it, it can often paint a lot of negative things on us.
9. Mood swings
Our mood swings are insane, we can go from having the best day to wanting to have a breakdown in a matter of seconds. They tend to always ruin our day and are a struggle if we're with other people since we may ruin the 'vibe'.
10. Co-Occurring Disorders
ADHD doesn't only come with ADHD, it can bring along anxiety, depression, insomnia, learning disabilities, OCD, ODD, Tourettes, DBD, Speech disability, and more.
11. Speech Patterns
This one gets us made fun of a lot, our irregular speech patterns. We often repeat ourselves, stutter, and/or stammer. We get told things like "Spit it out" , "Stop repeating yourself" , etc. Although its something we cant control.
12. Hyperfixations
THIS. Hyperfixation is SO glamorized on the media in which it isn't at all. We can hyperfixate on anything. A person, stuffed animal, TV show, anything. The reason hyperfixations are so difficult is because we can hyperfixate on a
negative thing such as a problematic person and this can impact us badly. We can see so many people shit talking the person we're hyperfixated on and we're unable to do anything since we're not supposed to like the person. Hyperfixations also cause us to lose sleep, not shower,
not eat, etc. Hyperfixations take up our whole brain and are so hard to just simply 'get over'.
To sum this up, ADHD isn't as glorious as the media makes it out to be. Its a serious thing that impacts the way we live their everyday lives. Its not something that should be made 'trendy'. I have ADHD btw so i understand what im talking abt. People with ADHD feel free to add on
