The Republicans, for all their screaming about socialism and Biden, have decided to let other people run the country. They have no agenda to overturn or replace anything. They don& #39;t really care about defeating Democratic policies. This should scare you more than anything. /1
Sure, they& #39;d take being a majority because it means power and money and security, but they don& #39;t really care about policy - beyond tax cuts for favored patrons and donors. Other than that, their goal is *never to have to live among their own voters, whom they clearly hate.* /2
Cotton, Hawley, Stefanik, Cruz didn& #39;t get top-notch educations and climb the greasy pole of power just to end up as the top attorney in Bumblefuck County or the Majority Whip in Albany or Jeff City. They& #39;re better than that, you see. Better than you. Deserving of greatness. /3
And this is what makes them dangerous. The idea that they& #39;re all "crazy right-wingers" is stupid. Being a right-winger, or *any*-winger - is about consistency and ideology. Their motto is "Semper Me," and "I didn& #39;t go to a good school just to end up among you peasants." /4
This may seem an odd criticism from a guy who regularly deplores the behavior of the common citizenry. (And I do.) But I deplore even more politicians who are driven by a pure will to power because they like their current zip code better than the one they come from. /5
Fanatics can be beaten because they harbor doubts and make serious mistakes. But people who will do and say anything to keep their parking spot and a reserved table are vastly more dangerous. The GOP is now full of kooks - but the enablers are far more of a threat, long-term. /6x
