also, yes this thread will contain spoilers. I will make sure to tag anything major as I go just in case. forgive any typos and messy writing/underlining/highlighting in my iwwv copy bc I was most likely losing it while annotating
ok, I’m not even sure this qualifies as foreshadowing and I may be overanalyzing, but after 3 reads I feel this is a subtle way of showing Pip’s over Richard’s entire existence. which same. it’s such a small detail but the way she just curtly cut him off is food for thought

I remember @altanrunin pointed this out and I thought it was a rlly good catch. it seems like Meredith’s just teasing Richard, but when he gets violent/mean they call him “dick” (derogatory) bc well... he’s being a dick

James being separate from the group in his introduction. introductions are important, consider Richard’s intro and his personality/roles. for James, we see him off on the “farthest corner” alone. I feel like this is foreshadowing to how distant he becomes as the book progresses
just this and the “because we all secretly want to kill him?” which just-
first Pericles mention aka I WILL scream. the fact that Pericles is referenced 8 pgs into this book haunts me, esp bc of how often Oliver is seen reading it/thinking about it. Pericles makes us lose our shit and to anyone who’s read this book, you know why.
excuse my messy highlighting, I was busy screaming when I realized Richard called James “sweet prince” literally 9 pages into the book. it caught me off guard and I’ve never been the same again. I’m sorry to quote vine but: what the fuck, Richard.
second Pericles mention here to haunt my life, plus Oliver saying he knows the text by heart which is just great for future James, isn’t it? how wonderful that Oliver knows this text so well that he’s the only one who could catch the hidden meanings in it 
James saying Pip’s “... a bit more resilient than the rest of us.” truer words have never been spoken and she proves it as this book progresses.
