#NASCAR #NextGen Thread on the new racecars.

1. Despite a lot of hoopla the cars don’t look particularly different. It’s the raindrop body continued. A true change would be for instance abandoning the raindrop for coke bottle wedge bodies like in the more distant past.
2. The shorter rear decks are the only discernible body change. I remember the last time manufacturers ran short deck bodies in the 1980s and it proved more a challenge than expected.
3. The cars run hood scoops which debuted in the Charlotte All Star Race in 2019 to positive reviews. So I don’t expect issues to develop there.
4. The big changes are in steering, transmission, driveline. But not getting enough attention is the wider tire footprint. Adding tire has been shown with the Modifieds and Indycars to help passing.
5. The eye popping change NASCAR announced is it will limit teams to just seven cars per shop as opposed to the fifteen-plus of the last twenty years. Intriguing will be how much this limits team spending.
6. There will be tests in traffic later this year. The only draft test I’m aware of to date was at Charlotte and it looked encouraging.
7. A question I have is how well the cars will slam draft. The sport certainty should want it given how effective it is for passing.
8. There’s some debate about how much horsepower and spoiler will be used. I doubt a small spoiler will be all that prevalent since it’s long been shown the bigger spoiler increases passing.
9. Add in I’ve seen no indication any manufacturer wants more than 550 horsepower.
10. Related is word of a speed reduction at Daytona in August after study of Logano’s rollover at Talladega. I’m guessing there will be further reduction in throttle bore and perhaps also narrowing of the spacer.

This I think will become more standard down the road.
